Resealable Bags: The Galley Must-Have You Never Knew You Needed

Ahoy, friends! Let’s talk about one of my absolute galley essentials—reusable resealable bags. Yes, those humble little pouches come in all shapes, sizes, and colours. These aren’t just any bags; they’re the Swiss Army knife of boat life. If you’re not already stocking your galley with a stash of them, let me show you why they’re a game-changer for sailors, cooks, and parents alike.

Galley Genius: Keeping Food Fresh and Tidy

First things first, resealable bags are lifesavers for food storage. On a boat, where storage space is tighter than my jeans after a week of baking experiments, these bags are absolute heroes. Here are just a few ways I use them:

  • Storing Open Foods: Once a bag of flour or oats is opened, the clock is ticking before it turns into a weevil buffet. Pop it into a reusable bag, seal it up, and voila! Your provisions stay fresher for longer.

  • Spice Premixes: If you’ve read my Noonsite post on storing spices (and if you haven’t, you can read it here), you know how much I love a good spice mix. Resealable bags are perfect for pre-mixing spices for your favourite curry or taco seasoning. Bonus: they’re spill-proof, (as long as you remember to cinch the seal!) which your galley shelves will thank you for.

  • Dry Ingredients for Passage Meals: Prepping meals for a long passage? Measure out dry ingredients like pancake mix or bread flour into resealable bags ahead of time. When you’re bouncing around in choppy seas, you’ll be grateful you don’t have to open cupboards and root through your drawers to find those ingredients you need.

  • Snacks on the Go: Resealable bags are perfect for packing snacks when you head ashore. Mixed nuts, dried fruit, or homemade granola bars—all neatly packed and ready for a picnic or a quick energy boost on a hike.

Beyond the Galley: Life Hacks Aplenty

Now, here’s where things get fun. These magical little bags aren’t just for food. They’re the unsung heroes of boat parenting and everyday boat life. For instance:

  • Toy Tamer Extraordinaire: Ever tried keeping Lego or Playmobil contained while living aboard? (Spoiler: It’s like trying to herd cats.) I stash my son’s toys in reusable bags to keep them organized and easy to grab when we head to a restaurant or a friend’s boat. Bonus: fewer tears when the tiny pirate sword doesn’t fall overboard.

  • Wet Swimsuit Wrangler: Finished your morning swim but still hours from being back onboard? Toss your soggy swimsuit in a reusable bag to keep it from soaking everything else in your daypack.

  • Random Junk Collector: Screws, hair ties, pen caps—you name it, reusable bags can hold it. It’s the easiest way to keep those small but essential bits from taking over your life (or your chart table).

  • Waterproof Phone Pouch: Going ashore on a paddleboard, kayak or if it is looking like a bit of a wet ride in the dinghy, pop your phone in a resealable bag to get it ashore without getting wet.

  • Passport Holder: We store our passports in a resealable bag making them easy to take ashore and protected whilst on the boat.

This Is Why I Love Resealable Bags (and You Will Too!).

Apart from being ridiculously practical, resealable bags are also reusable. They are easy to clean and can be rinsed out with water and dried in a jiffy. This is also an important part of our philosophy at Small Vegan Kitchen. We endeavour to make our galley practices as green as possible. It makes us feel good to know that our life on the water has as little negative impact as possible and a reduced carbon footprint.

So, whether you’re meal prepping, snack packing, or toy taming, reusable bags are the galley essential you didn’t know you needed. Stock up, try them out, and let me know your favourite uses—I’m always looking for new hacks!
